BILL SIMPSON Obituary

On April 17, 1969, in Ypsilanti, Michigan the world changed. Astor and Sally (Wickham) Simpson brought a baby boy into the world. They were young, in love, and scared. They named their boy William Crissmon Simpson. When he was a little boy, they called him “Billy“ but the name wouldn’t stick. He became Bill — Bill Simpson. He was happy, energetic, creative, and astoundingly intelligent. Above all, Bill was kind. Bill was deeply, profoundly kind.

Bill was joined by a brother, James (Rebecca) Simpson. They called him “Jamie,” and much to Bill’s amusement that name did stick. Bill was and remains his brother’s hero and very best friend.

Bill grew up. He stayed kind, and he became strong and brave.

Bill graduated from Union College (2000) and pursued a career in finance and accounting —but that was just a cover. Bill had more important interests. Bill loved movies and comedy. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of film and amassed an enormous cinematic library. Bill loved sharing his knowledge, and the movie screenings were always accompanied by his running commentary. The man could riff.

Bill was a social media legend. Referred to unironically as the Oscar Wilde of Middlesboro, Bill loved to share his unique wit, his tender observations, and his profane humor.

Bill was a rockstar uncle to his niece, Emma, and to his nephew, Eli. As they will tell you, he always gave the best gift at Christmas.

Most important to Bill, he was a father. Bill was a fiercely, proud and loving father to Sidney Astor Simpson with whom he built and shared a unique and wonderful world of art and imagination.

Bill was a true and unwavering friend to so many. If you knew Bill, you know. You know how he made you feel, and you know how much he loved you. He still does. You can still see him. That impish smile. You can still hear him. That mischievous laugh. That voice. Just listen. Wait…What is he saying? Can you make it out?

“SO LONG SUCKERS!!!”

Yeah…that’s definitely Bill.

A service of remembrance will be private.  A Celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
