J. C. Newport, 94, passed away Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. He was born February 20, 1931, at Little Clear Creek, and was the son of the late J.C. and Sarah Burress Newport.
J. C. was a graduate of Black Star High School in Harlan County, where he was on the basketball team. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. On March 5, 1954, he married Pearl Gregory in Tazewell, Tennessee. After his military service, he went to Union College, on the G.I. Bill, and Eastern Kentucky University. He was a business teacher at Pineville High School, Union College, and Bell County Vocational School. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, where he was the church clerk and the adult Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Dr. Gregory Newport; brothers and their wives, Segal (Minnie), Mitchell (Opal), Claude (Gladys), and Howard (Elsie) Newport; sisters and their husbands, Hazel (Jesse) Miracle, Mae (Ed) Money, and Helen (Jimmy) Mills.
Survivors include his wife of over 71 years, Pearl Gregory Newport; children, Chris (Kathy) Newport, Teresa Newport, Danny (Renee) Newport, and Kim Newport; grandchildren, Heather Newport (Bo) Hinkle, Amy Toms, Gary (Daniella) Toms, Jennifer Newport (Jeremy) Balitz, and Patrick (Brittani) Newport; great-grandchildren, Blake and Trevor Stephenson, Chandler, Kylie, and Savannah Hinkle, Gia Toms, Ryker and Nash Balitz, Landon Newport and baby Adalynn Newport, who is due the first of June.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2025 at the Green Hills Funeral Home in Middlesboro, with the Rev. Mark Hunter and the Rev. Caleb Hunter presiding.
Interment will be held in the Fuson Chapel Cemetery at Little Clear Creek immediately following the funeral service. Pallbearers are Blake Stephenson, Trevor Stephenson, Darrell Miracle, Jerry Newport, Casey Miracle, Ritch Newport, Gary Toms and Randy Newport.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the Green Hills Funeral Home., Middlesboro, until the funeral hour.
