Monetta Lorene Sturgill, 79, of New Tazewell, Tennessee, passed away on June 9, 2024. Monetta was born in Letcher County, Kentucky on June 29, 1944. She happily joined two of her children, Carlos “Howie” Sturgill and Lesia Sturgill, who preceded her entry to the pearly gates. She leaves behind three other children, Joey Sturgill, Jennifer Sturgill and Keith Sturgill, and many bonus blessings she had a hand in raising throughout her lifetime.
A passionate storyteller who could paint a clear picture with her energetic hand gestures, making you feel as you were reliving the scene right along with her as she shared her wild life adventures. Monetta never conformed to the expectations of others, from being a coal miner to running moonshine, and so much more in between. She was known for her sharp wit and a remarkable ability to speak her mind. Her words, always honest and often laced with humor, challenged others to see the world through an unfiltered lens.
Above all, Monetta’s greatest love was for her family, including the bonus members. She was a devoted mother and Mamaw who nurtured her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren with love, wisdom, and a dash of her signature mischief. Her lessons and love have left an indelible mark on their hearts, shaping them into the individuals they are today.
Monetta leaves behind a legacy of courage, strength, and a sense of going against the norm. Her journey reminds us that the richest life is lived on one’s own terms, full of love and unapologetic joy. As we say goodbye, we find comfort in the memories shared and the knowledge that Monetta’s free spirit will forever inspire us to embrace life’s infinite possibilities with open arms and heart.
Monetta leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren to continue telling her remarkable stories, including two very special granddaughters, Heather Overbay and Samantha Hill.
